Spindletop Champions
Spindletop Golf Tournament Champions
Spindletop was founded with an invitational golf tournament in 1966, and this event has grown over the years to become the world’s largest oilmen’s charitable golf tournament! Over 300 oil and gas executives join together during the weekend preceding the annual Offshore Energy Conference in Houston to raise significant funds for area youth charities. The Spindletop Golf Tournament format is a “Two-man Spindletop Shamble” allowing for a two-person team to win his/her flight with a low gross or low net score. The format also allows for one team to be crowned the overall tournament champion. The tournament requires that all teams include a service company representative paired with a customer or vice versa. An individual tournament champion is determined by a low gross score.

Driving Force
The Spindletop Golf Tournament champion team trophy, a bronze sculpture entitled “Driving Force”, was created by artist R. David Mattiza in 1999. It symbolizes the overall essence of Spindletop International and its golf tournament as its major fundraising event. The Derrick seen standing high over the green of a golf course represents a driving force that fuels the many worthwhile causes supported by Spindletop International. Within the rocks that surround the green and derrick, petroglyphs can be found symbolizing various facts important to the success of the Spindletop charity donations.
Commissioned by the Spindletop Board of Trustees, this trophy was originally used for the Spindletop Diamond Guest Invitational Champion Team, which was held for 5 years. Beginning in 2006, the Spindletop Golf Tournament Champion Team is presented a Driving Force sculpture to be displayed in each of their offices for one year. These beautiful bronze sculptures serve as a reminder to the receiving individuals that they are champions not only on the golf course but also by being involved in Spindletop and supporting Houston area youth.
